Boat Training & Commercial Licences

Take your boating further - the more you learn, the more enjoyable your boating will be.

Learn practical boating skills from professional Skippers, whether your interest is purely recreational, or for a career on the water. There's something special about messing around boats!

3 Good Reasons for practical competency based boat training before you head out.

ON BOARD YOUR BOAT

Private lessons on your boat. You, or your crew don't have to struggle with docking, anchoring and boat handling anymore. Now you gain confidence on your own boat with a fully insured commercially qualified Skipper standing by.

It's a great way to become more confident, knowledgeable and safe on the water. Learn to enjoy the "boating lifestyle" on your boat, at your dock, on your waterway.

This service can also help you get used to a new boat or a bigger boat and is an excellent follow up to the basic NSW Boat Licence Training — at owners risk.

We can help you in any number of ways. Check out the following:

  • Boat set up, mainentance & engineering
  • Assistance on your first few outings
  • More marina/docking practice
  • Training in the use of electronics
  • Night time boating and navigation
  • Launching & retrieving

You can bring along a friend and/or family member – max 4 people, too many people reduces individual training.

The service is charged at a competitive hourly rate and for a minimum of 3 hours training during the week or on weekends – call and talk to us about your specific needs.

The Owner of the boat: must be present on board during the training,

  • be a NSW Maritime general licenced 'Skipper' and,
  • have current fully comprehensive insurance for the vessel and,
  • have attended NSW Boating College basic boat licence training.
  • Agree to sign an indemnity

It is illegal to train people for a fee on a recreational vessel who are not licenced.

Group bookings for any training with the College are welcome at any venue - call and discuss what you have in mind.

WHAT LICENCE CAN I GET NOW ?

A recreational general boat licence allows you to Skipper any recreational power-driven vessel of any size except a Jet Ski or PWC which requires a special licence only available from NSW Maritime.

Some people will want to obtain more training to feel more competent on the water and this can be achieved privately, in groups or by attending commercial licence training.

COMMERCIAL QUALIFICATIONS

You may choose to complete a commercial certificate or attend training for selected or all competency based subjects that you are interested in, e.g.

  • Radio,
  • O H & S,
  • Navigation,
  • Maintenance,
  • Fire Fighting,
  • Survival at Sea or
  • First Aid ……...

as units of a commercial qualification.

Information about commercial qualifications is available from NSW Maritime 'Marine Certification Department' on telephone number (02)9563-8510 or www.maritime.nsw.gov.au

The commercial qualifications are:

  • General Purpose Hand (min age 15)
  • Coxswain (min age 18)
  • Master 5 ……...then for engineering
  • MED 2
  • MED 3……….

If you are considering a career in NSW then you will need qualifying verifiable sea time in vessels of 5m or larger - the information pack available from NSW Maritime will explain the details.

You cannot work on a commercial vessel in NSW without some basic training, be medically fit, pass an eyesight test and be of minimum age.

MARINE RADIO OPERATOR

Most of the Volunteer Marine Rescue groups offer training in the use of a Marine Radio. A licence can be obtained by attending training followed by an ACA examination e.g. to use VHF.

COMMERCIAL TRAINING

Training for all units of competence for commercial qualifications is available from the private and government sector:

  • Selected TAFE Colleges
  • OTEN
  • Fishing Industry

This training is excellent but it can take time especially if you are ready to start work.

Private Colleges generally offer excellent training, charge more for their services but complete the training in a shorter period of time:

  • Compass Training Australia P/L
  • SydneySeascape - Nelsons Bay

NSW Maritime generally require a practical examination, which Maritime Officers conduct, in addition to the college statements of attainment before certification can take place.
