Learning to safely secure the vessel alongside a jetty
An early morning start at one of our theory venues with the theory session and licence test, everything you need to complete the theory session is supplied. Morning tea and generous lunches are available at all our venues for reasonable prices. It is also a good idea to bring a packed  lunch.

Break times are flexible, subject to student numbers on the day. Once the theory,test and lunch break is over then it's off to the boat ramp for the practical boating session. Boat ramps used by the College are selected for their facilities and close proximity to theory venues.

  • Docking and anchoring
  • Ropework - lines and boating knots
  • Boating terms
  • Emergency procedures 
  • Effects of wind and current
  • Wake and safe operation
  • Boating risk and insurance
  • Regulation, safety and duty of care
  • Safety requirements
  • Maintenance
  • Chartwork, buoyage system and tides
  • The International Collision Regulations (ColRegs)
  • Local knowledge
  • Weather information
  • Towing people - waterskier, wakeboarders
Duration

8 hours face-to-face and pre-learning.

Pre-requisites

Participants must complete the course readings prior to attending the training.

What to bring

  • Pen
  • 1 form of photo ID  - Drivers licence, Passport, Photo ID Card, Student Card
  • Appropriate apparel for the practical boat session - Hat, suncreen, runners, no thongs, jacket suited for weather conditions of the the day
  • Packed lunch (optional)
Training and assessment

The course, test and practical are derived from training competencies of the SIS10 Sport, Fitness and Recreation Training Industry Package.

The units of competency are:

  • SROYAC001B - Comply with maritime rules and regulations
  • MEM50008B - Carry out trip preparation and planning
  • MEM50009B - Safely operate a mechanically powered recreational boat
  • MEM50010B - Respond to boating emergencies and incidents
Course Outcome

On successful completion of the course theory session, boat licence test and practical on-water assessment students will receive a Certificate of Satisfactory Course Completion.

The Certificate of Satisfactory Course Completion must be presented at a Maritime Service Centre before NSW Maritime will issue the boat licence, along with proof of ID and on payment of the licence fee the licence will be issued.

Special needs

Students who have special needs such as significant problems with understanding, reading or writing English are advised to contact a local NSW Maritime centre, where interpretative services can be made available.
